Schedule of Services
The Holy Communion is celebrated at Church of the
Annunciation at 9:00
AM each Lord's Day.
Our Sunday morning service is followed by a period of refreshment and
fellowship in the parish hall.
There is a weekday service of Evening Prayer and Holy Communion
at 5:30 PM on Wednesdays. On the second Wednesday of each month, this
service is a Public Service of Healing.
Major Holy Days are celebrated as announced. Church of the Annunciation
always has services on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Thanksgiving
Day. We also celebrate the entire cycle of Holy Week services: Palm
Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and the Great
Vigil of Easter.
We often also celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25),
Ascension Day, and the anniversary of our dedication (Holy Cross Day,
September 14).
The public is always invited and welcome at our services. All baptized
Christians are invited to receive Holy Communion with us.
In the past we have also offered services in Spanish.
- How We Are Governed
Church of the Annunciation is an Episcopal Church, and as such adheres
both to the canons of the national Episcopal Church and those of our
local diocese, the Diocese of East Tennessee. Our bishop is the Right
Reverend Charles G. vonRosenberg.
The rector is responsible for all spiritual affairs of the
congregation, especially worship and Christian education. The rector
has no vote in parish elections or on the vestry. Any other clergy work
directly under the supervision of the rector.
The laity is responsible for all temporal affairs of the congregation,
in particular the physical upkeep of the building and grounds and
financial matters. This responsibility is excercised through the
Vestry, elected at the Annual Parish Meeting. The Vestry each year
elects a Senior Warden (chief lay officer), a Junior Warden (special
responsibility for the building and grounds), a Clerk, and a Treasurer.
- Clergy Availability
The church office hours are 8:30AM-12:00PM on Tuesdays
and Thursdays and 1:30-4:30PM on Wednesdays, though this is subject to interruption
by
emergencies, meetings, and appointments.
There is a voicemail system at the church; please leave a message and
it will be returned. Also, the parish e-mail is checked regularly. The priest will be happy to make an
appointment with you at the earliest mutually convenient time.
Monday is the rector's day off.
In case of sickness, death, or emergency, do not hesitate to call the
rector at any time. If you cannot locate the rector, call one of the
Wardens.
- Holy Communion
Holy Communion is celebrated as the main service each Sunday. There is
also a service of Evening Prayer and Communion at 5:30 PM on Wednesdays
(on the second Wednesday this is a Public Service of Healing, followed
by a simple potluck supper).
Holy Communion is open to all baptized Christians who have been
admitted to Communion in their own faith tradition.
If you are unable to attend church, the rector will be happy to
bring Communion to you on an occasional or regular basis.
- Parish Newsletter
Our parish newsletter, "The Announcer", is published monthly.
Material for the newsletter is due on the Sunday before the last Sunday
of the month.
"The Announcer" is sent to all members, many friends of the parish,
all visitors for 12 months after their last visit, and anyone who
requests
to be put on the mailing list.
Extra copies of the current newsletter are kept in the Narthex. If you
would like to receive a copy, please use the contact form on the
Contact Us page.
- Church Membership
Anyone whose baptism is recorded in the Episcopal Church is a
baptized member. We accept any baptism done with water in the name of
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If you have never received Christian
baptism and desire baptism, contact the rector.
A baptized member who receives Communion regularly is known as a
communicant. A communicant who has received the sacrament of
Confirmation is a confirmed communicant with full rights to vote in
parish elections and
serve as an officer of the parish. Inquirers' Classes are offered at
regular
intervals, usually during Lent.
- Holy Baptism
Our understanding of baptism is that it is unrepeatable. If
you have received Christian baptism at any point in your life, your
baptism is fully accepted by us.
We also understand baptism as a public act of commitment; therefore the
normal time and place of baptism is at our regular public worship
service.
A conference is required before baptism to make certain the baptismal
candidate (and/or the parents and sponsors in the case of infants and
young children) understand and agree to the promises and obligations of
Christian baptism.
- Holy Matrimony
An Episcopal priest must have 30 days advance notice before
officiating at a wedding. This is to allow time for instruction in the
nature of Christian marriage, and to ensure that the requirements and
customs of this church regarding Holy Matrimony are properly observed.
In case of remarriage after divorce, additional time must be allowed
for obtaining the bishop's permission for the priest to officiate at
the marriage.
